I'll be speaking at the Michigan Agile Enthusiast's regular monthly meeting held at Bastone's Brewery in Royal Oak MI. My topic is "Five Symptoms of Mechanical Agile" - same talk I gave at Agile 2009. For details and updates, here's the link: h...

I enjoyed doing my talk "Five Symptoms of Mechanical Agile...And Some Good Advice on Becoming Change-Ready" today. Although it was scheduled at friggin' 7:30am (ugh) and I only had a handful of people come (around 10 not counting Pillar people) it...

Hi, I'm posting our first chapter, as it has been submitted to Addison Wesley. I'm not going to post every chapter, but this may be a good introduction to the book that you can use when explaining it to friends and colleagues. Please read and le...

Why I'm Joining Agile + RIgor:
Hi. I am the co-author of this book we're calling "Agile in the Bloodstream: Rebuilding Agile and the Concept of a Human Team with Systems Thinking."

I am joining this community because I've realized I desperately need help with this book. I feel that Hong and I are onto something very important with this topic and I want to say it the right way in this new book.

I am hoping that we can get all kinds of feedback, critiques, enthusiasm and support from creating this community.

What I think you'll get back is a very close role in the creation of this book, a deep understanding of these important concepts that we're introducing, and a good knowledge of how a software industry book is written (for those of you who haven't written one yet but want to!).
About Me:
I am a computer consultant, speaker and author. My first book was co-written with Eamonn Guiney called "Use Cases: Requirements in Context." Writing that book with Eamonn and us figuring out how to get it published was one of the high points in my life. The book sold over 29,000 in two editions, nine printings and was translated into 2 languages (Chinese, Japanese).

My consulting life (my 8-to-5) is with a public company called Perficient, Inc. I've worked here since 2006 and am currently on a project in North Carolina (although I still live in Columbus, Ohio).

I love speaking to groups about methodology and requirements and jump at most opportunities that come my way. My next speaking engagement is at the International Institute of Software Testing (IIST) conference in Minneapolis MN September 10, 2008.

My other interests are holistic healthcare, renewable energy, music, reading and politics (American and Canadian).

I was born in Western Canada and am 45 years old, living in Columbus Ohio with my beautiful wife Tamara and our three cats - Teaser, Pixel and Ginkgo.

The Rich Picture as a Systems Tool

Peter Checkland, one of our pre-eminent systems thinkers, has something he calls the Rich Picture, which is part of his Soft Systems Methodology (SSM).

A Rich Picture is to get a fuller view of a "problem situation," including what people are thinking and feeling, their particular perspectives on things beyond just the "hard facts."

Here is an example of a good Rich Picture.

Illustrations

I don't know if I mentioned this yet, but we wanted to have our illustrations have a "comic book" type of feel to them.

Hong and I found an illustrator named Megan Corby who will be doing that work for us. She gave us an initial rough sketch of some of our "characters" who will appear throughout the book.

I'll post several of the illustrations as Megan completes them to give you a feel of the finished work.

What do you think?

And Now We're Editing

Well, the long, long process of writing the initial draft is completed. And it's a mess, if I say so myself.

My policy while writing was to use the manuscript to contain the sections that I was considering putting in the book, as well as any notes along the way of ideas I had while trying to get to sleep, or conversations with Hong, or random thoughts throughout the day.

Plus, each chapter got organized and reorganized without actually deleting anything. (Didn't want to lose that idea, y'know?… Continue

Agile 1.0 Versus Agile in the Bloodstream

I drew this while I was cooking dinner tonight to illustrate how I think Agile in the Bloodstream is different than most of Agile 1.0 being done today.

Your thoughts please.
